Vocabulary sources

The ready-made decks are built on well-established frequency and teaching lists. Each one solves a specific problem.

English

Oxford 3000 and Oxford 5000

Word lists published by Oxford University Press, organised by CEFR level. Oxford 3000 is the core of the language: 3308 words from A1 to B2 that you simply cannot do without. Oxford 5000 adds another 2015 rarer, more precise words for B2 and C1.

NGSL

The New General Service List is a frequency list of 2809 words built on a sample of roughly 273 million words. It's split into three parts in frequency order.

Oxford answers "what should I know at this level", NGSL answers "what will I actually run into most often".

German

Goethe-Institut

The official vocabulary lists (Wortlisten) for the Goethe-Zertifikat exams: A1 — 629 words for Start Deutsch 1 and 531 for Fit in Deutsch 1, A2 — 1163 words, B1 — 2985 words. They were compiled by the institute that runs the exams.

The B1 list is large, so it's split into two parts that can be worked through in sequence.

German decks are available with translations into both Russian and English.

Your own decks

You can build a deck from scratch and fill it with anything: vocabulary from a textbook, words from a TV series, professional terminology. The review algorithm works the same for library decks and your own.
